The Presets join a now crowded field of synth-based bands. FischerSpooner, The Legends, Hot Chip, Cut Copy, Ladytron, Hercules and the Love Affair, The Faint, Ruby Isles, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and Glass Candy make up just the good ones that I have seen over the past year or so. Like M83, The Presets have a zinger of a song that piques initial interest but otherwise whose oeuvre largely consists of formless filler that seems all to easy to do with keyboard driven music. The Presets wouldn’t bother me so much if all of their superior stylistic brethren (many noted above) all enjoyed the success that this second-rate band has. Although, I will say that they do use long builds and releases that stretch over several songs like a Techno/House dj might, to good effect.

This song “This Boy In Love” is their best song by a country mile. Next week I will see FischerSpooner, a far more superior and more innovative outfit, at a smaller venue than The Presets, which is a bit galling, but, hey, bigger crimes have been commited.

Update:Thanks to Brad for correctly IDing the track name.

  1. if you knew anything you would realise this song is actually ‘this boys in love’ and julian was just saying this is sweet as’ in reference to the gig..
you really dont no much do you.

  2. I have to admit that I don’t ‘know’ much about the band and went to the show based on the strength of this song. The rest of the songs played at the show were rote and boring, I thought. Thanks for the track name intel, though.
