Dragonette released my favorite album of 2009 with “Fixin’ to Thrill”. Making it to the top of my year-end list is an impressive feat in itself, but is even more impressive when you take into account that I’ve only acquired 3 or 4 albums that were released in 2009. The album has consistently made it’s way onto my daily playlist with a heavy doses of infectious hooks and melodies.
Nonetheless, I was pretty excited to see them live. The show wasn’t exactly the most well-attended show I’ve been to, but the band was very excited to be performing for the NYC crowd, judging by their enthusiastic reaction to the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction. The set consisted of a balanced mix of songs from their 2 albums, with some additional singles and new songs thrown in for good measure.
Every picture I’ve seen of the band shows them as a 4-piece, but at the show they came out as a trio. Fortunately, the missing member was not the drummer, so they got bonus points for that. They still sounded great. Every song was tweaked just a bit for live performance, to maximize each songs’ danceability. Several songs which I wasn’t a huge fan of on record were given new life (see “Pick Up the Phone” below). I can only hope the band plans on recording their live show professionally, because in several cases the live versions rival their recorded counterparts. And if the band ever wants to redeem their bonus points, someone tell them to contact me.
