The opener for Midlake last month was Sarah Jaffe, whom Carlie and I both thought was the real stand-out of the night. To me, she’s reminiscent of Jolie Holland, which is a very good thing: ethereally beautiful vocals paired with alt-country melodies, evoking ghosts of the Old South. She comes out of Dallas and has recently signed to Kirtland Records (Toadies and others); her new album should be out sometime this spring. The original version of this song first appeared (I think) on a self-released EP of the same title that you can listen to on Lala.
