New Model Army – 225 (Live)
New Model Army fall in the arena of The Alarm and U2 as far as articulate UK-based rock bands formed in the early 80s that were able to successfully address social conscious subjects. NMA more so than the other UK peers ran a bit closer to reaching Midnight Oil type levels of urgency and contemporary topicality (More...)
Faster Pussycat – Bathroom Wall (Live)
I can only think of one other time when I have been so compelled to go out and see a band that is firmly planted in the Heavy Metal/Hair Metal arena. I did see Van Halen with David Lee Roth a few years ago, but the ultimate decision to go was heavily influenced by others. The sole non-DLR exception is the recent Faster Pussycat show. Admittedly though, I probably would not have bothered if I didn't know that Taime Downe was a solid contributor to Pigface. (More...)
Unrest – Cherry Cream On (Live)
The flagship band of Teen Beat records, Unrest was the headliner to each of the six 26th Anniversary shows. Unrest's first cassette came out in 1985 (!?!) but hit their stride in the early '90s and whose sound can be heard in the indie-verse everywhere. (More...)
Versus – Gone To Earth (Live)
I missed a fair amount of the Versus set. That is too bad since from what I am reading, their new album On the Ones and Threes seems to be stealing a bit of thunder from Arcade Fire's new long player. From the buzz that the new album is generating, I can suggest that you should give it a spin as it seems to be mentioned already as a 2010 standout. (More...)
The Rondelles – Rediscover Fire (Live)
As noted in the pre-Teen Beat showcase show as featured on TSOI, The Rondelles were one of the big surprise treats for me. These cats beat Best Coast to the punky '60s girl-group styled paeans to boys, romance, and fast cars by a solid decade. (More...)
Bossanova – It’s You They Want (Live)
Since bands are hyped-up so early these days it is always shocking to discover a fully-formed band that has been around awhile without having to suffer through its awkward proto-band stage. Halfway through the set of Bossanova I couldn't help thinking, where on earth did these guys come from and why have they not crossed my radar at least once? (More...)
Cotton Candy – Jingles + Fanci Pantz (Live)
I was no fool and thereby made a point to show up to the Teen Beat showcase frightfully early as to not miss Mark Robinson and Evelyn Hurly's project Cotton Candy. The original material of Cotton Candy is great as one would expect if you are familiar with Mark's other bands (Unrest, Air Miami, Flin Flon, etc..) (More...)
Best Coast – That’s The Way Boys Are (Live)
Best Coast put out an EP last year, which, is becoming the standard somewhat low-commitment way for an indie-band to generate some buzz and to shop around for a label deal. The Make You Mine EP features 60's style girl-band type songs drenched in shoe-gazer guitar feedback - chocolate and peanut butter to me. (More...)
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Cold White Christmas (Live)
When I was first introduced to Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in 2002 or so, I immediately thought that I had stumbled upon a outfit so right for the times that there was no way that it was going to remain under the radar for long. For sure there was no better distillation of the youthful malaise and disenchantment of what is often called the 'Lost Generation'. Alas, as far as I know anyway, this one-man band didn't take off like I expected (More...)
The Rondelles – Mission: Irresistible (Live)
Washington DC’s Teenbeat Records, one of the all-time best and now longest running indie labels out there, hosted...
