The Monday Set: Excuse 17 – Berkeley – 4/28/95
I finished Sara Marcus’s "Girls to the Front: The True Story Of The Riot Grrrl Revolution" this past weekend so I'm declaring it Riot Grrrl week here on TSOI. Quite often while reading the book I found myself thinking it was more like reading a diary than a documentation of the riot grrrl scene. (More...)
Amber Inn: Life Instantaneous (Live Video)
Amber Inn were one of those bands that came around just about the time I was getting out of my "emo" phase and more into electronic/indie bands. I bought their 7"s, but they didn't get nearly the love they would have gotten had they been released a few years earlier. (More...)
The Monday Set: Earwig – Bruxelles – 7-20-91
I had a request for this show a couple of months ago and I'm getting around to posting it. 2/3s of the band Earwig eventually became Insides who had a couple of fantastic releases on 4AD in the mid-90s (More...)
Universal Order of Armageddon: Visible Distance (Live Video)
TSOI generally isn't very needy, but we're looking for some help here. We're trying to track down the original taper of this UOA show. If you know anyone from the Nebraska scene who might have an idea of who shot this, drop us an e-mail or mention it in the comments. (More...)
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult: Disko Fleshpot/Kooler Than Jesus (Live)
During my high school years in Jersey, I was enamored with just about every artist on the Wax Trax! roster. For those who don't know, Wax Trax! was a legendary Chicago-based "industrial music" label that consistently put out quality releases throughout the late 80s - mid 90s (More...)
The Monday Set: KARP – Providence – 11/13/94
The "KARP Lives" documentary should be coming out sometime this year (I'm hoping), but in the meantime, here's a little live KARP to hold you over. They played in my basement in Minneapolis on this same tour and blew everyone away, obviously (More...)
Cut Copy: Hearts on Fire, Blink and You’ll Miss the Revolution (Live)
For those who aren't familiar with Cut Copy, you probably should be. While the "electro/new wave/synth-pop" formula has been done over and over again to the point of death, then done some more, Cut Copy manages to do it better than just about everyone else in the business (More...)
French Horn Rebellion – Beaches and Friends (Live)
French Horn Rebellion are an outfit whose name surfaced on my radar as a result of CMJ 2010, although, I didn't get a chance to see them until afterward. As far as I have gathered, they are djs, producers, and a live act that tread largely in blood-rushing thump-thump dance party vein of indie rock. (More...)
The Monday Set: Unwound – Hartford – 4/7/95
The overall feeling I get from this Unwound recording is that it was a "paying your dues" type of show, opening for Fugazi. This short set was played to what sounds like a very unappreciative crowd who were more interested in Ian and co. bringing the rock than a more-mellow-than-average Unwound set. (More...)
Dragonette: Gone Too Far, Pick Up the Phone (Live)
Dragonette released my favorite album of 2009 with "Fixin' to Thrill". Making it to the top of my year-end list is an impressive feat in itself, but is even more impressive when you take into account that I've only acquired 3 or 4 albums that were released in 2009. The album has consistently made it's way onto my daily playlist (More...)
